Display ASCII files.
Hey, you can annotate ASCII! While any editor can show ASCII text, in the Multivalent system you can add to it any functionality, from hyperlinks to annotations to lenses. And there's still lots of ASCII in the world, including most e-mail messages. Ultimately, as technology marches onward, every present concrete document type will seem as inexpressive as ASCII.
